Cigarette smoke contains at least 40 different harmful ingredients that can severely damage our body. Smoking can affect badly all the vital organs of your body – the brain, heart, lungs, kidney, liver and your eyes.
There is a term in medical terminology – Age related Macular Degeneration (AMD). It happens in old age. Macula is the most sensitive area of the eyes. It is fed by tiny blood vessels from the central artery.
During old age, the musculature of the tiny blood vessels becomes obliterated and the degenerative process starts leading to dimness of vision.
Some chemicals present in the cigarette like tar, nicotine etc. Get deposited in those tiny blood vessels. With time, the blood vessels are blocked by those chemicals. And the eyesight is compromised. It is confirmed after a study conducted by the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, Madison.
They have published this report in JAMA.
Cataract formation is also hastened by cigarette smoke. Cataract is the clouding of the lens of the eyes. There is 40% increased chance of cataract formation in case of chronic smokers.
One of the important predisposing factors for cataract formation is increased free radical in our system. Studies have proved that smokers have 3 timed increased volumes of free radicals in their system than their non-smoker counterpart.
You could also have your eyes damaged by the hot ash being blown into them, Ouch.

So you see smoking makes you blind!
